An illustration by Hirohiko Araki

Hiraizumi's cultural heritage wasinscribed as a World Heritage site following the severe destruction that befell Iwate Prefecture and the Tohoku region from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
In Iwate Prefecture, along with announcing The Hiraizumi Declaration on the Tohoku Restoration, the manga artist Hirohiko Araki from Tohoku (Sendai city in Miyagi prefecture), whose work includes the series "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" and has achieved success both domestically and abroad, was commissioned to illustrate the declaration.
Intrinsic to the illustration, the Hiraizumi ideals of living with respect for all life and the wish for coexistence between people and nature relate to our future in which we recover from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
