Shirotoritate Mansion Site
Shirotoritate Mansion Site Yanaginogosho and Hiraizumi Iseki-gun [Historic Site] (Oshu City)

This large, riverside hill between Hiraizumi-Maesawa IC and the Cattle Museum was the site of the fortified mansion belonging to Abe no Yoritoki’s eighth son, Norito, Fujiwara no Kiyohira’s maternal uncle. The moat and wall remains present a well-preserved and nearly complete picture of what a medieval residential fortress would have been like. Shirotoritate sat atop a hill on a peninsula jutting out into the Kitakami, and served as a monitoring post for river traffic both before and after Oshu Fujiwara Hiraizumi—from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries. The more than 180° panorama of the river afforded from atop this hill was functional then and still beautiful now.
