Introduction of Cultural Assets in Hiraizumi

Chojagahara Haiji Site
Chojagahara Haiji Site Yanaginogosho and Hiraizumi Iseki-gun [Historic Site] (Oshu City)

In 1958, excavations uncovered the extensive temple-like ruins just one kilometer north of Chuson-ji. Ceramics and other relics unearthed indicate that this was most likely an important pre-Hiraizumi temple. The site is bounded by the remains of either earthworks or a gable-roofed earthen wall which measured one hundred meters on each side. The building and gate were set along the central axis of this enclosure; this is a highly classical layout. This temple predates Chuson-ji but its location illustrates a growing awareness of the lands south of the Koromokawa River.
